The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test required for admission to many graduate programs, especially in the United States, Canada, and Europe. It measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills. The test is about 1 hour and 58 minutes long in its latest shortened version (as of 2023). The Verbal Reasoning section tests reading comprehension, vocabulary, and sentence structure. The Quantitative Reasoning section covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. The Analytical Writing section (30 minutes) involves writing one essay analyzing an argument. Each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections is scored on a scale of 130–170, and the Analytical Writing section is scored from 0–6. The GRE is computer-based, offered year-round, and accepted by thousands of graduate schools, including many business and STEM programs. It is designed to evaluate skills needed for success in graduate-level studies.
