What Is the Duolingo

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a standardized test of the English language designed to be internet-based rather than paper-based. DET is an adaptive test that uses an algorithm to adapt the difficulty of the test to the test-taker.[1][2][3] It was developed by Duolingo in 2014 as Test Center[4] and grew in popularity and acceptance at universities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Duolingo English Test is scored on a scale of 10–160, with scores above 120 considering the test taker to be proficient in English. The test costs less than TOEFL or IELTS.
Duolingo is a popular language-learning platform that offers interactive and gamified lessons to help users learn a variety of languages. Launched in 2011, it is available as both a mobile app and a website, making it accessible to learners worldwide. Duolingo uses a fun and engaging approach with short exercises, daily goals, and a reward system to keep learners motivated. It covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, and is suitable for beginners as well as intermediate learners. With over 40 languages available, including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and even fictional ones like Klingon, Duolingo has become one of the most widely used language-learning tools globally.

How are Duolingo lessons designed?

Duolingo lessons are designed using AI and principles of language science. The website makes learning a language into a game that users complete in their free time. Each language is illustrated as a “tree with nodes,” and each node has several lessons. To complete the lessons and advance to the next nodes, users answer game-like vocabulary questions. The questions are designed as activities such as translation, assembling a sentence with given words, speaking, listening, and photo matching.
